Shopify speed optimization is the work of finding what makes your store slow for the people actually shopping on it, then fixing those causes in the theme and app stack. Shopify's hosting and CDN are fast, so a slow Shopify store is almost always slow because of what has been added on top: apps, tracking tags, large images, custom fonts and theme code written for features nobody uses. This service is part of our Shopify development services.
Our Shopify page speed optimization focuses on the pages that carry revenue (product pages, collection pages and the cart) and on phone visitors first. The aim is a store that feels quick to a shopper on a mid-range phone, which is a different target from a perfect score on a desktop lab test.
What Our Shopify Speed Optimization Covers
- App and script audit. We list every script that loads on each template, match it to the app or tag that added it, and flag leftovers from apps that were uninstalled but left code behind in the theme.
- Image delivery. Correct image sizes through Shopify's image_url filter and srcset, modern formats served by the Shopify CDN, lazy loading below the fold and a high fetch priority for the main product or hero image.
- Fonts. Fewer font files and weights, sensible font-display settings and preloading only the font the first screen needs.
- Theme JavaScript and Liquid. Deferring non-critical scripts, removing unused features, and simplifying Liquid loops that slow page rendering on large collections.
- Tag management. Moving marketing pixels into Google Tag Manager or Shopify Customer Events with sensible firing rules, and using server-side tracking where it reduces browser load without losing data.
- Layout stability. Reserving space for images, review widgets, announcement bars and cookie banners so content does not jump while the page loads.
What Is Core Web Vitals Optimization?
Core Web Vitals optimization is work that improves the three metrics Google uses to describe loading, responsiveness and visual stability. Google assesses each one at the 75th percentile of real visits, and Interaction to Next Paint replaced First Input Delay as the responsiveness metric in March 2024.
| Metric | Good threshold | Common causes on Shopify |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | 2.5 seconds or less | Oversized hero or product images, lazy loading applied to the main image, slider scripts that delay the first image |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | 200 milliseconds or less | Heavy app scripts on the main thread, variant pickers and filters that re-render too much, chat widgets and popups |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | 0.1 or less | Images without dimensions, late-loading review stars, announcement bars and banners injected after load |
How to Speed Up a Shopify Website
To speed up a Shopify website, remove what loads without earning its place and make the first screen load first. If you want to try before hiring anyone, start here:
- Test product and collection URLs on mobile in PageSpeed Insights, not only the home page.
- Uninstall apps you no longer use, then check theme files for code they left behind.
- Never lazy load the main product or hero image, and give every image a width and height.
- Upload images at sensible sizes and let the Shopify CDN serve modern formats.
- Cut custom fonts to two files or fewer.
- Delay chat widgets, popups and low-priority pixels, but never add to cart or variant scripts.
Shopify Website Speed Optimization by Template
Each Shopify template slows down for different reasons, so we work through them separately.
Home page
Sliders with several full-width images, autoplay video and stacked app widgets are the usual culprits. A single static hero with a correctly sized image is almost always faster, and often clearer for shoppers.
Collection pages
Large collections slow down through heavy product card markup, quick view scripts, swatch apps and filter apps that re-render the grid. We trim the card, load secondary images only where they help, and check that filtering stays quick on a phone.
Product pages
The main image is usually the LCP element, so it must load first. Review widgets, size guides, upsell carousels and subscription widgets compete for the main thread, which hurts INP when shoppers tap a variant. We load what sits below the fold later and keep variant switching light.
Cart and cart drawer
Upsell and shipping-bar apps often load on every page just to power the cart drawer. We check whether they can load only when the drawer opens.
How We Run a Shopify Speed Project
- Baseline (week 1). We record field data from the Chrome UX Report and your Shopify web performance report, then run lab tests with Lighthouse and WebPageTest on your main templates. Field data tells us what shoppers experience; lab data tells us why.
- Find the causes (weeks 1 to 2). Using performance traces and a script inventory, we attribute slow loading and slow interactions to specific apps, tags or theme code, and estimate the gain from each fix.
- Agree trade-offs with you (week 2). Some slow scripts earn their place, such as a review app that drives conversion. We present the list with options (remove, replace, delay or keep) so business decisions stay with you.
- Fix on a duplicate theme (weeks 2 to 4). All changes are made on an unpublished copy of your theme and tested with your live apps before publishing, so the live store is never used as a test bench.
- Measure and monitor (4 weeks after release, then monthly). Lab results change on the day we publish. Field data takes longer, because the Chrome UX Report uses a rolling 28-day window, so we check again after four weeks and keep monitoring as new apps and campaigns are added.
Shopify Speed Optimization Deliverables and How Improvement Is Measured
- Baseline report. Field data for LCP, INP and CLS by template and device, plus lab results for your home, collection, product and cart pages, recorded before any change.
- Script inventory. Every script on each template, the app or tag that adds it, its weight and our recommendation (remove, replace, delay or keep).
- Fix log. Each change made, the template it affects and the Git commit, so any fix can be reviewed or reversed.
- Before and after comparison. Lab results on release day and field data after the 28-day window has refreshed.
- Monthly monitoring note. Field data trends, new apps or tags that appeared, and anything that needs your decision.
Success means more of your product and collection URLs moving into the "good" group in the Search Console Core Web Vitals report, mobile LCP and INP improving in field data, and layout shift no longer flagged on key templates. You can also watch mobile bounce and add to cart rates in your own analytics, though those move for many reasons. We do not promise a specific score, ranking or revenue change.
What Speed Work Can and Cannot Change
Speed work removes friction; it does not guarantee rankings or revenue. Page experience is one of many signals Google uses, and a faster store still needs the right products, prices and traffic. We report the metrics we changed and let you judge the commercial effect in your own analytics.
Some parts of the stack sit outside theme control. Checkout performance and server response are run by Shopify, and third-party apps change their code without warning. That is why we recommend ongoing monitoring instead of a one-off fix, and why theme rebuilds are sometimes the better answer. When the theme itself is the problem, we move the work into Shopify theme development instead of patching it.
If your site is not on Shopify, our wider web development team offers website speed optimization services for WordPress, WooCommerce and custom builds using the same measurement approach.
Common Shopify Speed Optimization Mistakes
- Installing a speed app to fix speed. Many add their own script to every page and hide the real causes.
- Lazy loading everything. Applying lazy loading to the hero or main product image delays LCP instead of improving it.
- Deferring scripts that shoppers need. Delaying variant pickers, add to cart or consent scripts breaks buying or tracking.
- Chasing the home page score. Most paid and organic traffic lands on product and collection pages, which are often slower.
- Testing only on desktop broadband. Real shoppers are mostly on phones, and field data reflects that.
- Fixing once and walking away. New apps, tags and campaign banners add weight back within months.
Shopify Speed Work: DIY, a Speed App, a Freelancer or an Agency?
| Option | Good for | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Do it yourself | Removing unused apps, resizing images and cutting fonts using the checklist above | Theme code, script attribution and INP problems need developer tools and skills |
| A speed app | Image compression when your team uploads very large files | Cannot decide which apps to remove, and some add weight of their own |
| A freelancer | A known fix on one template | Often no monitoring afterward, and changes may be made on the live theme |
| An agency on a care plan | Audit, fixes across templates and ongoing monitoring as the store changes | A monthly cost, which only makes sense if the store earns enough from organic and paid traffic |
Shopify Speed Testing Tools We Use
| Category | Tools |

Why Choose 95 Solutions for Shopify Speed Optimization
- We balance speed against marketing. Our founder has been Head of Marketing for a Florida-based resort wear brand since 2016, so we know which scripts pay for themselves and will not strip out tracking your ad campaigns depend on.
- Tested on our own sites. We run our own sites on a lightweight custom CMS we wrote, and measure the same Core Web Vitals on them that we report to clients.
- Safe changes. Every fix is made on a duplicate theme, kept in Git and reversible.
- Senior-led and transparent. Mustafa reviews every audit, and you get plain explanations of what changed and why, with short minimum terms on monthly plans.
Stores That Need Shopify Site Speed Optimization
A good fit
- Stores failing Core Web Vitals in Search Console, especially on mobile.
- Stores that have installed and removed many apps over the years.
- Brands spending on paid social or Google Ads who want landing pages to load quickly for that traffic.
Probably not a fit
- Stores already passing Core Web Vitals that want a perfect Lighthouse score for its own sake.
- Stores planning a full redesign in the next few months. Build speed into the new theme instead.
Speed work often runs alongside a Shopify maintenance and support plan, and if a speed fix needs custom functionality rebuilt, our Shopify app development team can replace a heavy app with something lighter.
Shopify Speed Optimization Pricing
Shopify website speed optimization runs through our monthly Shopify care plans. The first weeks focus on the fixes found in the audit, and the ongoing plan monitors field data and reviews new apps and theme changes before they slow the store down again.
The plan that fits depends on the number of templates and product types, how many apps and tags load on the storefront, whether the theme itself needs restructuring, and how often your team adds new apps or campaign sections. A store with a clean modern theme and a handful of apps needs less ongoing time than one with years of installed and removed apps.
