A Wix developer builds and extends websites on Wix and Wix Studio: designing layouts that hold up on every screen size, setting up Wix apps such as Stores, Bookings and Members, and writing Velo (JavaScript) code when the drag-and-drop editor runs out of options. We take on the whole job, from a short brochure site to a member portal with dynamic pages and outside API connections, as part of our web development services.
You get a site that lives in your own Wix account, code that is commented and stored in the site itself, and a handover that explains what each custom piece does. Most clients come to us in one of two situations: they want a professional Wix site without learning the editor, or they already run a Wix site and need something the editor cannot do on its own.
What Our Wix Development Services Include
| Service | What we do | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Wix Studio builds | Design in Figma first on larger projects, then build in Wix Studio with layouts set for desktop, tablet and mobile breakpoints. | Pages that look intentional on a phone, not a shrunken desktop layout. |
| Classic Wix Editor sites | Start from a template, restyle it to your brand and tune the separate mobile view page by page. | A fast, affordable launch for a small business site. |
| Wix Stores | Products, variants, categories, payments, shipping rules, tax settings and abandoned cart emails. | A store that can take real orders on launch day. |
| Bookings, Members and Blog | Service and class schedules, staff calendars, member areas, gated pages and a blog your team can post to. | Appointments, memberships and content run from one dashboard. |
| CMS collections and dynamic pages | Collections for team members, locations, listings or case studies, each displayed through one dynamic page template. | Add a new location or listing by filling in a form, not by building a page. |
| Velo custom code | Page code, backend web modules, data hooks, custom form validation, scheduled jobs and router pages. | Features that templates and apps do not offer. |
| Wix API integrations | Connections to your CRM, ERP, booking or inventory system through outbound calls and HTTP endpoints, with keys kept in the Wix Secrets Manager. | Leads, orders and bookings reach the systems your team already uses. |
| Fixes and rescues | Broken mobile layouts, slow pages, leftover apps, failed form notifications and half-finished builds. | An existing site brought back to a state you can trust. |
After launch, ongoing updates and fixes sit with our Wix website maintenance plans, and search work sits with our Wix SEO services.
Wix Studio Developer or Classic Wix Editor: Which Your Site Needs
Wix runs two editors, and choosing the right one at the start saves a rebuild later. The classic Wix Editor positions elements freely on the page and keeps a separate mobile view that you adjust by hand. It is quick to learn and suits small sites that one person will update.
Wix Studio is the platform Wix built for agencies and designers. It uses responsive layout tools such as grids, stacks and breakpoints, so one layout adapts to each screen size instead of being maintained twice. It also includes a built-in code editor for Velo, reusable design assets across sites, and client handover features. As a Wix Studio developer, we use it for sites with more than a handful of templates, sites that need custom code, and any build where several people will edit content.
| Question | Classic Wix Editor | Wix Studio |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile layout | Separate mobile view, adjusted manually | Responsive breakpoints from one layout |
| Best for | Small business sites up to about a dozen pages | Larger sites, custom design systems, Velo-heavy builds |
| Learning curve for your team | Gentle | Steeper for layout changes, simple for content edits |
| Custom code | Velo available through Dev Mode | Velo built into the editor, with local development options |
Moving a classic Editor site into Studio is usually a layout rebuild rather than a switch, so we settle this question during scoping.
Velo by Wix: What a Wix Velo Developer Builds
Velo is the Wix development platform. Custom code is written in JavaScript, with frontend code running in the browser and backend code running on Wix servers. When a client asks what coding language Wix uses, this is the practical answer: anything custom on a Wix site is JavaScript through Velo, plus HTML embeds where a third-party widget needs one.
- Page code. Show or hide elements, filter repeaters, validate form fields and react to clicks without loading a new page.
- Backend web modules. Functions that run on the server and can be called from the page, with permissions controlling who may call them. This is where pricing logic, eligibility checks and API calls belong, so secrets never reach the browser.
- Data hooks. Code that runs before or after an item is added or changed in a CMS collection, for example to stamp a reference number or notify a team member.
- HTTP functions. Endpoints on your own domain that other systems can call, such as a payment provider or form tool sending a webhook into your site.
- Backend events and scheduled jobs. Run code when an order is paid or a booking is made, or on a schedule, such as a nightly sync of stock levels.
- Router pages. Custom URL patterns that pull content from a collection or an outside source.
- npm packages. Approved JavaScript libraries installed into the site for dates, formatting or API clients.
We keep Velo code small, named clearly and commented, because the next person to open it may not be us. Each project ends with a short code map listing every file and what it does.
Wix API Integrations and Headless Wix Projects
The Wix API lets outside systems read and write data in a Wix site, and lets a Wix site call outside services. For most clients this means one of three patterns. First, a form or booking on Wix sends data to a CRM such as HubSpot or Salesforce. Second, an outside system updates Wix, for example product stock coming from an inventory tool. Third, Wix calls a third-party API to show live data such as availability or quotes.
Wix also supports headless projects, where Wix business features such as Stores, Bookings and Members run behind a front end built in another framework through the Wix SDK. This suits teams that already have a React or Next.js site and want Wix to handle commerce or scheduling. It adds hosting and development work, so we only recommend it when a standard Wix front end cannot meet the design or performance requirement.
For features you might reuse across several sites, Wix Blocks and the Wix CLI can package custom functionality as a private app. We use that route when the logic is shared; for a single site, Velo code inside the site is simpler to maintain.
How We Work as Your Wix Developer, Step by Step
- Scoping and site review (2 to 3 days). We review your current site or references, list every page, app and integration, and confirm whether classic Wix or Wix Studio fits. You receive a written scope and a fixed quote.
- Design (1 to 2 weeks). Smaller projects restyle a template to your brand. Larger projects start with page designs in Figma so you approve the look before anything is built.
- Build (1 to 3 weeks). We build in your Wix account, set up Wix apps, create CMS collections and add your content. You can watch progress in the editor preview at any time.
- Custom code and integrations (1 to 3 weeks, when needed). Velo features and API connections are built and tested against sandbox or test accounts before touching live data.
- Testing and search setup (3 to 5 days). We test forms, bookings and checkout on real devices, set page titles and descriptions, add redirects from any old URLs and connect Google Search Console.
- Launch and handover (1 to 2 days). We connect your domain, publish, record a walkthrough of how to edit the site, and set our access to the role you choose.
A small business site usually takes 2 to 4 weeks from approval to launch. A Wix store takes 4 to 6 weeks, and a Wix Studio build with custom code takes 6 to 10 weeks depending on integrations.
Wix Development Deliverables and What a Good Handover Looks Like
- A published site on your own Wix account and premium plan, with your domain connected.
- Figma design files for projects that include design.
- A content guide showing which sections your team can edit and how.
- A code map for any Velo code, plus a list of CMS collections, their fields and permissions.
- A redirect list covering every old URL that changed.
- A launch test log: forms submitted, test orders or bookings placed, emails received, and mobile checks on iPhone and Android.
- A recorded walkthrough of the editor for your team.
Success at launch is measurable: every form delivers to the right inbox or CRM, test transactions complete, pages render correctly at each breakpoint, the sitemap is submitted in Search Console and the browser console shows no errors from custom code. Traffic and sales depend on your marketing after launch, so we do not promise them.
Wix Developer Pricing
We build Wix sites at a fixed price agreed before work starts. The cost depends on the number of unique page templates, whether design starts in Figma, which Wix apps are involved (Stores, Bookings, Members), how many products or collection items we load, and how much Velo code and integration work the site needs. Your Wix premium plan and any paid Wix apps are billed by Wix to your account, separately from our fee.

How to Hire a Wix Developer You Will Not Have to Replace
The best way to find a good Wix developer is to look at live Wix sites they built, on your phone, and ask how they handle accounts, code and handover. Portfolio screenshots hide mobile problems and slow pages. Here is what to check before you hire:
- Whose account the site is built in. It should be yours, or transferred to you at launch. Sites built in a freelancer's account and never transferred are a common problem.
- Classic or Studio. A developer should be able to explain which editor fits your site and why.
- How custom code is documented. Ask to see an example code map or handover note.
- What is fixed and what is hourly. Content entry, extra pages and revisions are where budgets drift.
- Who writes the copy. Many delays come from missing content, not from the build.
| Option | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Doing it yourself | A simple site with a template and time to learn | Mobile layout and SEO settings are easy to miss |
| Freelance Wix developer for hire | A defined task such as a layout fix or one Velo feature | Availability, account ownership and handover quality vary |
| Wix Marketplace partner | Finding vetted Wix professionals by service type | Still compare scope, documentation and who does the work |
| Agency such as 95 Solutions | Design, build, code, integrations and support in one team | Pays off most when the project has more than one moving part |
Wix Development Limits We Explain Before You Commit
Some web developers avoid Wix, and the reasons are worth knowing before you choose it. None of them rule Wix out for a typical small business, but they matter for some projects.
- No code export. A Wix site cannot be exported and hosted elsewhere. Leaving Wix later means rebuilding on the new platform.
- No server access. Backend code runs inside Wix, with limits on request time and data operations. Heavy processing belongs in an outside service that Wix calls.
- Templates are fixed per site. On classic Wix you cannot swap a published site onto a different template; a new design means restyling or rebuilding.
- Complex commerce. Large catalogs, complex B2B pricing or many sales channels often fit Shopify or BigCommerce better. Our Shopify vs Wix comparison covers where each wins.
Wix handles the search basics well, including custom page URLs, editable titles and descriptions, structured data settings and a URL redirect manager. The limits above are about portability and scale, not about whether a Wix site can rank.
Common Wix Website Problems Our Developers Fix
- Broken mobile views. On classic Wix, desktop changes do not always flow to mobile, leaving overlapping text or hidden buttons.
- Too many apps and embeds. Each widget adds scripts. We remove what is unused and replace heavy embeds with native elements where possible.
- Changed URLs without redirects. Renaming a page slug without a 301 redirect loses the old page's search history and breaks links people saved.
- Collections with loose permissions. CMS collections left readable by site visitors when they hold data meant for admins only.
- Forms that notify nobody. Submissions stored in the dashboard but never emailed to the person who should respond.
- Images uploaded at full camera size. Wix optimizes images on delivery, but oversized originals and heavy background videos still slow the first view.
Wix Development Use Cases by Business Type
| Business | Typical Wix setup |
|---|---|
| Clinics, salons and consultants | Wix Bookings with staff calendars, intake forms and reminder emails |
| Coaches and course creators | Members area, pricing plans and gated content pages |
| Local retailers | Wix Stores with in-store pickup and local delivery rules |
| Real estate and directories | CMS collections with dynamic listing pages, filters and inquiry forms routed to a CRM |
| Restaurants and venues | Menus, event pages and reservation or ordering apps |
| Nonprofits | Donation forms, event registration and a regularly updated news section |
Who Our Wix Development Services Suit, and Who They Do Not
A good fit if you:
- Want a Wix site that your own team can update without calling a developer for every change.
- Already run on Wix and need a feature, integration or redesign the editor cannot deliver alone.
- Need Bookings, Members or a small store set up correctly the first time.
- Prefer a fixed price and a written scope over open-ended hourly billing.
Probably not a fit if you:
- Need a large catalog with complex pricing; a dedicated commerce platform will serve you better.
- Must host the site on your own servers or keep full code ownership for compliance reasons.
- Only need a one-line text change; the Wix editor makes that quick to do yourself.
