Shopify Theme Development for Stores That Outgrew Their Template

Custom Shopify themes and careful customization of premium themes, built in Liquid with version control and sections your team can edit.

Our Shopify theme development service builds custom Shopify themes from your design and reworks premium themes that no longer fit how you sell. We work on Online Store 2.0 architecture, keep every change in Git, and build sections, blocks and metafield-driven content so your team can update pages without a developer. You approve the new theme as an unpublished preview on your own store before it goes live.

Shopify theme development is the work of building or reshaping the Liquid theme that controls how your store looks, loads and behaves. Most stores start on a Theme Store theme, and that is usually the right call. The problems arrive later: a stack of one-off edits nobody documented, apps injecting code into theme files, and a homepage that needs a developer every time marketing wants a new banner. This service is part of our Shopify development services, and it exists to fix exactly that.

We build custom Shopify themes for brands with a clear design system and a reason to own their code, and we handle Shopify customization of premium themes for stores that need changes without a full rebuild. Either way, the goal is the same: a theme your team can run day to day, that loads quickly, and that can be updated without breaking something else.

What Our Shopify Theme Development Includes

Our Shopify theme development services cover new builds, careful changes to existing themes and the content structure behind them.

  • Custom Shopify theme development. A theme built from your Figma design on Online Store 2.0 architecture, with JSON templates and sections available on every page, not only the homepage.
  • Shopify theme customization services. Changes to a Theme Store theme made in a way that keeps the upgrade path open where possible, with every edit recorded so it can be reapplied if the theme developer releases a new version.
  • Custom sections and blocks. Size charts, comparison tables, lookbooks, bundle builders, shoppable image hotspots and anything else your merchandising needs, with settings your team can change in the theme editor.
  • Metafield and metaobject content. Fabric care, ingredients, designer profiles or technical specs stored once in structured fields and displayed across product pages, collections and filters.
  • App compatibility. We set up the theme so apps add features through app blocks and app embeds, instead of pasting code into theme files that is left behind when the app is removed.
  • Accessibility and performance built in. Semantic markup, visible focus states, responsive images and minimal JavaScript are part of the build, not a separate project later.

Custom Shopify Theme or Customizing an Existing One?

We will tell you honestly which option suits your store. Plenty of brands are better served by a well-chosen premium theme with targeted changes than by a custom build.

If a theme change is part of moving platforms, it is scoped together with our Shopify migration service so redirects, data and design are planned as one project.

How Do You Develop a Shopify Theme?

You develop a Shopify theme locally with Shopify CLI, preview it against a development store, keep the code in Git, then push it to your live store as an unpublished theme and publish once it is tested. Here is how that looks on our projects.

  1. Theme audit and content model (week 1). We review your current theme, installed apps and the code they have added, then list every type of content your team edits. That list becomes the content model: which sections, blocks, metafields and metaobjects the new theme needs.
  2. Design in Figma (weeks 2 to 4). We design key templates at phone width first, then desktop. Design components map one to one onto theme sections, so what you approve in Figma is what gets built.
  3. Build in Liquid with version control (weeks 4 to 9). Our Shopify theme developers work locally with Shopify CLI against a development store, and the theme is connected to GitHub so every change has a history and can be reverted. Theme Check runs on the code to catch Liquid errors and performance problems early.
  4. QA with real content (weeks 9 to 10). We test each section with empty, short and very long content, across browsers and real phones, with your installed apps switched on. Lighthouse and accessibility checks run on the main templates.
  5. Preview, launch and handover (weeks 10 to 11). The finished theme sits as an unpublished theme on your store so you can preview it with live products. We publish at a quiet trading hour, keep the old theme as a fallback, and hand over documentation and short walkthrough videos.

Those timings are typical for a custom Shopify theme with 8 to 12 templates. Premium theme customization follows the same steps but compresses into 3 to 6 weeks, because the layout system already exists and design work focuses on the sections that change.

Shopify Theme Development Deliverables and What a Good Handover Looks Like

At the end of a theme project you should hold everything needed to run, change and audit the theme without us. These are the outputs we hand over:

  • The published theme and a fallback. The new theme live on your store, with the previous theme kept unpublished for at least a few weeks in case you need to compare or roll back.
  • A GitHub repository in your organization. Full commit history, a README explaining the folder structure, and branch rules so future developers work on copies rather than the live theme.
  • A section and block library. A written list of every section, what each setting does, and which templates it is allowed on, so your team knows what they can build without help.
  • The content model. Every metafield and metaobject definition the theme reads, with notes on who fills it in and where it shows on the storefront.
  • Walkthrough videos. Short recordings showing how to build a landing page, swap a homepage campaign and add a new product type.

Success is measured in the weeks after launch, not on launch day. Good signs are your team publishing campaign pages without opening a developer ticket, Core Web Vitals on product and collection templates holding at or better than the old theme in Search Console, add to cart and checkout rates in Shopify analytics staying steady or improving, and no app features lost in the switch. We agree these at kickoff. We do not promise a conversion lift from a theme alone, because pricing, traffic and product mix move those numbers too.

Common Shopify Customization Problems We Fix

  • Leftover code from uninstalled apps still loading in theme.liquid and snippets, slowing every page.
  • Edits made directly in the code editor over several years, with no history, so nobody knows what can safely be changed.
  • Content hardcoded into templates that should live in sections or metafields your team can edit.
  • Older vintage themes without Online Store 2.0 sections, which limit app blocks and page layouts.
  • Layout shift from review widgets, announcement bars and cookie banners that push content around as the page loads.
  • Variant pickers that confuse shoppers, such as sold-out combinations that can still be selected.

Where speed is the main complaint, we often pair theme work with Shopify speed optimization. If a feature cannot be done in the theme at all, it may need custom Shopify app development instead.

Custom Shopify Theme Features by Store Type

The sections worth building depend on what you sell. These are the requests we see most often by vertical:

  • Fashion and apparel. Color swatches driven by metafields instead of image file names, size guides stored once as metaobjects and shown on every relevant product, fit notes, and lookbook sections that link several products in one shoppable image.
  • Beauty and skincare. Ingredient lists and how-to-use content held in structured fields, shade finders, routine builders that add several products to the cart at once, and before and after comparisons that stay accessible.
  • Home and furniture. Dimension and material specification tables, fabric swatch request forms, delivery lead time messages by product, and room scene images with hotspots.
  • Food, drink and supplements. Nutrition and allergen panels, subscribe and save placement that works with your subscription app's app block, and bundle builders for mixed packs.

Shopify Theme Developer, Freelancer or Agency: Which Fits?

The right choice depends on how much theme work you have, how often it comes up and who will maintain the code afterward.

OptionWorks well whenWatch out for
In-house Shopify theme developerYou ship theme changes every week and can keep a developer busy full timeSingle point of knowledge, and design and QA skills may sit outside one person
Freelance Shopify theme developerA defined, smaller change such as one new section or a template fixAvailability during launches, code left outside Git, and no one to cover holidays
Shopify theme development companyA full custom theme, a premium theme overhaul or work that touches design, content model, apps and tracking at onceAgencies that hide senior people behind account managers or keep the code in their own repository

Many stores combine them: an agency builds the theme and its documentation, then an in-house marketer or a dedicated Shopify developer handles weekly changes inside the section library.

How to Choose a Shopify Theme Development Company

Use this checklist when comparing proposals for a custom Shopify theme or a large customization project:

  1. Ask where the code will live. The answer should be a repository you own, connected to your store through Shopify's GitHub integration or deployed with Shopify CLI.
  2. Ask for the content model before the design. A good team lists the sections, blocks, metafields and metaobjects first, because that decides what your staff can edit later.
  3. Check how apps will be handled. Look for a plan that uses app blocks and app embeds, and a list of every installed app to be tested before launch.
  4. Look at their accessibility and speed process. Ask which checks run before launch and on which templates, not only the home page.
  5. Read the handover list. Documentation, training videos and a fallback theme should be written into the scope, not offered as extras.

Why Choose 95 Solutions for Shopify Theme Development

  • Senior review on every theme. Mustafa, our founder, has 11+ years in digital marketing and reviews the content model and templates before build starts, so the theme is planned around how the store makes money. There are no layers of project managers between you and that review, as there often are at a large Shopify theme development agency.
  • Marketing needs are built in. We plan for paid landing pages, email campaign links, collection SEO and tracking from the first wireframe, because we run marketing for stores ourselves.
  • You own the code. The theme lives in your store and in a GitHub repository you control. No license lock-in, no proprietary framework you need us to maintain.

Stores That Need a Shopify Custom Theme

A good fit

  • Established Shopify stores whose theme has been patched by several developers and is now hard to change.
  • Brands with a design system that a premium theme cannot express without heavy workarounds.
  • Teams that want to build landing pages and seasonal campaigns in the theme editor without a developer.

Probably not a fit

  • A brand-new store still testing product demand. Start with a good Theme Store theme and revisit later.
  • Stores that want a single small edit. Our Shopify maintenance plans handle small changes more economically.

Shopify Theme Development Pricing

Theme projects are fixed price, agreed after we review your store and designs, and paid in milestones. Premium theme customization usually fits the smaller store build plans, while a custom Shopify theme falls under the custom plan.

Cost is driven mostly by the number of unique templates (home, collection, product types, landing pages, blog, account), the number of custom sections, whether you supply a finished Figma design or need us to design it, how much content must move into metafields and metaobjects, how many apps need testing or replacing, and whether the store runs several languages or markets.

Theme Development questions

What is Shopify theme development?
Shopify theme development is building or changing the theme that controls how a Shopify store looks and behaves, using Liquid, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and JSON templates. It ranges from targeted changes to a Theme Store theme to a fully custom theme built from a new design. A good Shopify theme development company also sets up sections, blocks and metafields so your team can edit content without code.
What is a Shopify theme?
A Shopify theme is the set of template files that controls your storefront's layout, design and features. It decides how the home page, collections, product pages, cart and blog look, and which settings your team can change in the theme editor. A store can hold several themes but only one is published at a time, so a new theme can be built and previewed without touching the live site.
What is included in a typical Shopify theme?
A typical Shopify theme includes layout, templates, sections, blocks, snippets, assets, config and locales folders. Layout holds the shared page wrapper, templates define each page type (usually as JSON on Online Store 2.0), sections and blocks are the pieces your team arranges in the editor, snippets are reusable Liquid, assets hold CSS, JavaScript and images, config stores theme settings and locales hold translations.
How do I customize a Shopify theme?
Start in the theme editor under Online Store, Themes, Customize, where you can change sections, blocks, colors and fonts without code. For changes the editor cannot make, duplicate the theme and edit the copy, ideally through Shopify CLI and Git rather than the built-in code editor. Record every code change, because edits to core files must be reapplied when the theme developer releases an update.
Can I build my own Shopify theme?
Yes, if you or someone on your team is comfortable with Liquid, HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Shopify CLI can generate a starter theme and run a local preview against a development store, and Shopify's developer documentation covers each step. Budget time for testing across devices and installed apps. For most merchants, customizing a well-built Theme Store theme or hiring a developer gets a better result sooner.
How do I change my theme on Shopify?
In the Shopify admin, go to Online Store, then Themes, and add the new theme from the Theme Store or upload it as a file. It appears in your theme library unpublished, so you can customize it and preview it with your live products first. When it is ready, choose Publish. Before switching, list your installed apps and any code added to the old theme, because some features may need setting up again in the new one.
How can I tell which Shopify theme a store is using?
Open the store in a desktop browser, view the page source and search for "Shopify.theme". That object usually shows the theme name and, for Theme Store themes, a schema name and theme store ID you can look up. Heavily customized or renamed themes may only show a custom name. Free theme detector websites read the same information. Knowing the base theme helps when you want a similar layout, but a custom Shopify theme will not appear in the Theme Store at all.
