Hiring an Android app development company is about more than getting screens coded. Android runs on thousands of device models from dozens of manufacturers, each with its own screen sizes, OS versions and battery rules. Google Play has its own policies, review process and quality thresholds. A good Android app works on a budget phone with a weak connection as well as on the latest Pixel, and keeps passing Play policy checks after launch.
Our Android app development services cover the whole job: product scoping, Material Design UX, native Kotlin development, the backend and admin panel, device testing and the Google Play launch. This page focuses on native Android. For the wider picture, including iOS and cross-platform options, see our mobile app development hub.
Our Android App Development Services

| Java to Kotlin modernization | Older Java apps moved to Kotlin step by step, with Compose screens added alongside existing views. |
| Google Play launch | Play Console setup, store listing, Data safety form, testing tracks and a staged rollout. |
| Maintenance after launch | Target API updates, library upgrades, crash fixes and new features through our app maintenance services. |
Native Kotlin or Cross-Platform for Your Android App?
Native Android development in Kotlin is the right choice when Android is your main platform, when the app depends heavily on hardware or background work, or when performance and platform feel are central to the product. Google has recommended Kotlin as the preferred language for Android development since 2019, and Jetpack Compose is its current recommended toolkit for building interfaces.
Cross-platform frameworks such as React Native or Flutter make more sense when you need iOS and Android at the same time on a tighter budget, and the app is mostly forms, lists, content and standard device features. Our cross-platform app development team builds those. If you need native on both platforms, we pair this work with our iOS app development team and share one backend.
| Your situation | Our usual recommendation |
|---|---|
| Most of your users are on Android, or Android launches first | Native Kotlin |
| Heavy use of Bluetooth, background location, sensors or the camera | Native Kotlin |
| Internal app for staff on company-issued Android devices | Native Kotlin, distributed through managed Google Play |
| Both platforms at launch, standard features, limited budget | Cross-platform |
| Existing React web app and team | React Native |

How Our Android App Development Process Works
- Discovery (2 to 3 weeks). We define the users, the core journeys and the first release, review Play policies that affect your model, and plan the backend. You receive user stories, clickable wireframes of every key screen and a fixed price. The discovery fee is credited to the build.
- Design (2 to 4 weeks). We design key screens in Figma and test the prototype on real Android phones with a handful of target users, fixing navigation problems before any code exists.
- Build in two-week cycles (8 to 16 weeks). Each cycle ends with a new build on your phone through the Google Play internal testing track and a short demo. Backend and admin panel work runs in parallel.
- Testing across devices (1 to 2 weeks, plus ongoing). Automated tests run on every change, and we test on a matrix of Pixel, Samsung and budget devices across supported Android versions, including slow networks and low storage.
- Google Play release. We prepare the store listing, screenshots, content rating, Data safety form and privacy policy link, run closed testing, then release to a small percentage of users before rolling out to everyone.
- Launch support (4 weeks). We watch crash reports, Android vitals and reviews daily, ship fixes quickly and agree a maintenance plan for the year ahead.
A focused first release, sometimes called an MVP, usually takes 3 to 5 months from discovery to Google Play. Apps with payments, offline mode, real-time chat or complex integrations take longer, and we confirm the timeline after discovery.
Google Play Rules That Shape an Android App Build
Google Play policy decides more of your build than most founders expect. We check these during scoping, because each one can delay a launch if found late.
- Target API level. Google Play requires new apps and updates to target an Android API level within about a year of the latest major Android release. Apps that fall behind cannot ship updates, so this is part of every maintenance plan.
- Android App Bundles and Play App Signing. New apps are published as App Bundles, and Google manages the app signing key. We set up upload keys so you are never locked out.
- Testing for new personal accounts. New personal developer accounts must run a closed test with a minimum number of testers for at least 14 days before publishing to production. Registering as an organization, which requires a D-U-N-S number, avoids this, so we advise businesses to do that early.
- Data safety and permissions. You must declare what data the app collects and why. Sensitive permissions such as background location, SMS and call logs need a strong justification and sometimes a review declaration.
- Account deletion. Apps that let users create an account must also let them request deletion of that account, both in the app and through a web link.
- Payments for digital goods. Subscriptions and digital content sold in the app generally go through Google Play Billing. Physical goods and services can use payment providers such as Stripe.
Android Device Fragmentation: How We Test
Fragmentation is the main reason Android apps behave well in the office and badly in the field. We plan for it from the first sprint rather than testing on one phone at the end.
- Device matrix. We agree a list of devices and Android versions based on your audience, covering a recent Pixel, popular Samsung models and at least one low-memory budget phone.
- Manufacturer battery rules. Some manufacturers stop background work aggressively. We use WorkManager and Firebase Cloud Messaging correctly so reminders, uploads and syncs still happen.
- Screens and input. Layouts adapt to small phones, large phones, tablets and foldables, and we test with large font sizes and TalkBack for accessibility.
- Networks. We test on slow and unstable connections, and design offline states so the app degrades gracefully instead of freezing.
- Cloud testing. Firebase Test Lab runs automated tests on many physical and virtual devices we do not keep in-house.
Android App Deliverables and Quality Targets
We do not promise downloads or ratings. We commit to a well-built app and to quality targets you can see in Play Console.
- A published app on a Google Play developer account you own, plus the source code in your repository.
- A backend API and admin panel on hosting you own, with documentation.
- Automated tests and a build pipeline that produces signed release bundles.
- Crash and ANR rates kept below Google Play's bad behavior thresholds, which are a 1.09% user-perceived crash rate and a 0.47% user-perceived ANR rate. Apps above them can be shown less prominently on Google Play.
- Startup time, app size and battery use reviewed before release, with Baseline Profiles where they help cold start.
- An analytics plan with events for sign-up, activation and your key business actions.
Android App Development Pricing
Android projects start with a fixed-price discovery phase, and the build is then priced as a fixed-scope project. Cost depends on the number of screens and user roles, the backend and admin features, integrations such as payments, maps or Bluetooth, offline support and how many devices and Android versions you need to support. Google Play's one-time registration fee and hosting are paid directly by you.
Google Play developer account ($25 one-time) is registered in your name so you own the app listing.

Android App Development Company, Freelancer or In-House Team?
| Option | Strengths | Weak spots |
|---|---|---|
| Freelance Android developer | Lower cost, direct contact | Rarely covers design, backend, testing and Play policy alone, and availability can change mid-project |
| In-house team | Full control and product knowledge over time | Slow and costly to hire, and you need an Android lead to judge candidates |
| Android app development company | Design, Android, backend and QA from one team, with process and documentation | You need to stay involved, because no agency knows your users better than you |
A common path is to build the first release with an agency, then hire an in-house Android developer who inherits clean code and documentation. We plan handovers for exactly that.
How to Choose the Best Android App Development Company for You
The best Android app development company for you is the one whose process fits your project, not the one with the longest client list. Ask these questions before you sign.
- Who owns the Play Console account and the code? It should be you from the first day.
- Which devices will you test on? A real answer names devices and Android versions.
- How do you handle Play policy? They should mention Data safety, target API level and permission declarations without being prompted.
- Who builds the backend? Many app problems come from the API, not the app.
- What happens after launch? Look for a written maintenance plan rather than open-ended hourly support.
- Can I see builds as they progress? You should be installing new builds on your own phone every two weeks.
