A proper conversion tracking setup is the difference between ad platforms that optimize toward buyers and ad platforms that optimize toward noise. Smart Bidding in Google Ads and Meta's delivery system both learn from the conversions you send them. If a purchase is counted twice, a newsletter sign-up is marked as a sale, or half of your leads never reach the platform, the algorithm learns the wrong lesson and spends accordingly.
Our conversion tracking services sit under our analytics and tracking services. They focus on the conversions your ad accounts use for bidding and reporting, and it connects directly with the campaigns our Google Ads management and Meta Ads management teams run.
What Is Conversion Tracking?
Conversion tracking is the measurement of valuable actions people take after interacting with your ads or website, recorded so each action can be credited to the campaign, ad or keyword that led to it. A conversion can be a purchase, a qualified lead form, a booked call, a trial start, a phone call from an ad or an offline sale closed in your CRM.
Not every action deserves the same weight. We sort conversions into the ones that should steer bidding (purchases, qualified leads) and the ones that are useful to watch but should not steer spend (add to carts, newsletter sign-ups, page scrolls).
What Our Conversion Tracking Setup Covers
- Conversion audit. A review of every conversion action in each ad account: what it counts, where it comes from, whether it is primary or secondary, and whether its numbers match your store or CRM.
- Google Ads conversions. Purchase and lead actions with values, transaction IDs and enhanced conversions.
- Meta Pixel and Conversions API. Browser and server events with deduplication and strong customer matching.
- Other platforms. Microsoft Advertising UET, TikTok Pixel and Events API, LinkedIn Insight Tag and Conversions API, Pinterest tag.
- GA4 key events. The events GA4 treats as key events, aligned with what the ad platforms count so the numbers can be compared.
- Offline and CRM conversions. Qualified leads and closed deals sent back from HubSpot, Salesforce or Pipedrive so bidding can target revenue instead of form fills.
- Testing and documentation. End-to-end test orders and leads, plus a conversion map showing every action and its source.
Google Ads Conversion Tracking Done Properly
Google Ads conversion tracking has several settings that quietly change what your campaigns optimize toward.
- Primary versus secondary actions. Only primary actions feed bidding. We keep purchases or qualified leads as primary and move page views, add to carts and micro events to secondary, where they are visible but do not steer spend.
- One source per conversion. Accounts often count the same purchase twice, once from the Google Ads tag and once from an imported GA4 key event. We choose one source for bidding and make the other secondary.
- Values and transaction IDs. Purchases should pass the real order value and a transaction ID so Google can remove duplicates when a thank you page reloads.
- Counting setting. Purchases normally use "every" conversion, while leads use "one", so a person submitting a form three times is not counted as three leads.
- Enhanced conversions. Hashed first-party data, such as the email address entered at checkout, is sent with the conversion to improve matching when cookies are missing. For lead forms, enhanced conversions for leads can connect later CRM outcomes back to the original click.
We walk through the full process in our article on Google Ads conversion tracking, including the common mistakes that inflate reported results.
Meta, TikTok, Microsoft and LinkedIn Conversions
Meta relies on the Pixel in the browser and the Conversions API from a server. When both send the same purchase, Meta deduplicates them using a matching event name and event_id, so we make sure both sides pass the same ID. We then check Event Match Quality in Events Manager and add customer information parameters, with consent, where the score is weak. Shopify stores have specific options here, which we explain in our guide to the Meta Conversions API on Shopify.
TikTok, LinkedIn and Microsoft Advertising follow a similar pattern, with a browser tag plus a server or API option, with its own deduplication rules. We set up only the platforms you actually advertise on, because every extra tag is more code on your site and more to maintain.
How We Deliver a Conversion Tracking Setup
- Map the conversions (days 1 to 3). We agree with you which actions matter: purchases, qualified leads, booked calls, trial starts. Each one gets a definition, a value rule and a single source of truth.
- Audit what exists (week 1). We compare each ad platform's reported conversions with store orders or CRM records over the same period. Large gaps point to missing tags, duplicates or consent problems.
- Implement (weeks 1 to 2). Tags and events are built in Google Tag Manager, platform integrations or server containers, with values, IDs and customer data parameters passed from the data layer.
- Test end to end (week 2 to 3). We place test orders and submit test leads, then confirm each conversion appears once, with the right value, in every platform and in GA4, under accepted and rejected consent.
- Monitor after launch (two to four weeks). We watch the first weeks of data against your back end and fix any drift. You receive a conversion map documenting every action and where it comes from.
Most projects take one to three weeks, depending on the number of platforms and whether the data layer needs developer changes. CRM offline imports can add time because the CRM must first store click IDs.
Conversion Tracking Setup Deliverables and Accuracy Checks
- A conversion map listing every conversion action in every ad account and GA4: what it counts, its source, its value rule, whether it is primary or secondary, and its counting setting.
- A reconciliation sheet comparing platform-reported conversions with store orders or CRM records for the same days, before and after the work.
- QA evidence from test orders and test leads, with screenshots from Tag Assistant, Meta test events and each platform's diagnostics.
- A change log of every tag, setting and integration we touched, so your team or your ad agency can see exactly what changed.
Success here is accuracy, not a bigger number. After a good setup, each platform reports conversions within a sensible range of your back end (platforms will never match exactly, because of attribution windows and consent), duplicate purchases disappear, values match real order totals, and the diagnostics in Google Ads and Meta Events Manager stop showing warnings. Reported conversions sometimes fall after we fix tracking, because double counts are gone. That is the point: bidding now learns from real sales.
Browser Tags, Server Events and Offline Imports Compared
| Method | What it captures | When it is worth adding |
|---|---|---|
| Browser tags (Google Ads tag, Meta Pixel) | Conversions on the site, using cookies and click IDs in the browser | Always, as the base layer |
| Enhanced conversions | The same conversions, matched more often using hashed first-party data | Almost every Google Ads account with checkout or lead form data |
| Server events (Conversions API, server-side GTM) | Conversions sent from your server, less affected by ad blockers and browser limits | Meaningful Meta spend or noticeable signal loss |
| Offline conversion imports | Qualified leads, booked appointments and closed deals from your CRM | Lead generation where many form fills never become customers |
For offline imports, the CRM has to store the click ID from the original visit (the gclid for Google Ads), usually through hidden form fields, and Google Ads only accepts offline conversions within its import window after the click. We set up the capture first, then the stage mapping, so a lead marked qualified in HubSpot or Salesforce flows back to the right campaign. For server-side builds, see our server-side tracking service.
Common Conversion Tracking Errors We Find
- Purchases counted twice because the Google Ads tag and an imported GA4 event are both primary.
- Thank you page tags that fire again on refresh, with no transaction ID to deduplicate them.
- Meta server events sent without event_id, so browser and server purchases are both counted.
- Lead forms tracked on button click rather than on successful submission.
- Consent banners that block all tags, including those allowed to send cookieless pings under Consent Mode.
Signs your conversion tracking is inaccurate
- An ad platform reports more purchases than your store recorded for the same days.
- Cost per acquisition drops sharply right after a site, theme or checkout change, with no matching rise in orders.
- Conversions fall to zero after an app update, a new consent banner or a domain change.
- Google Ads shows strong lead numbers while your sales team reports spam and duplicates.
If you want to know which of these apply to you, request a free marketing audit and ask us to review your conversion tracking setup. For a full review of GA4 and every tag alongside your conversions, our Google Analytics audit service covers the wider account.
Conversion Tracking on Shopify and WooCommerce
Shopify checkout conversions
On Shopify, checkout events are tracked through Customer Events, either from app integrations such as the Google and YouTube app or Meta's sales channel app, or from custom pixels. We decide which source handles each platform, so an app pixel and a GTM tag do not both report the same purchase, and we test with real orders.
WooCommerce Google Ads conversion tracking
For WooCommerce Google Ads conversion tracking, we usually push a WooCommerce data layer with the GTM4WP plugin and fire the Google Ads purchase tag on the order received page, passing the order total and order ID as the transaction ID. We check that a refreshed thank you page does not count twice and that the value matches your tax and shipping rule.

Who Needs Professional Conversion Tracking Services
A good fit: advertisers spending meaningfully on Google or Meta whose reported conversions do not match their orders, lead-generation businesses that want bidding based on qualified leads, and stores moving to a new theme, platform or checkout.
Probably not a fit: businesses not yet running paid ads, or accounts that only need a single platform's default integration switched on. In those cases, our GA4 setup service or a Google Tag Manager review may be the better first step. For browser restrictions and ad blockers, see our server-side tracking service, and for reporting on top of clean data, our marketing dashboard builds.

A conversion tracking setup is priced as a fixed-price project. Most clients start with the Tracking Audit or the GA4 and GTM Setup plan, and add Server-Side Tracking when browser signal loss is significant. The price depends on how many ad platforms and accounts are involved, whether the site's data layer needs developer work, whether offline CRM imports are in scope, and how many markets need separate consent handling.
