A Google Analytics audit service exists for one reason: most analytics setups drift. Someone installs a Shopify app that adds a second purchase tag, a developer renames a form, a cookie banner update switches off measurement for half your visitors, and a year later the dashboard says one thing while the store or CRM says another. Budgets and ad platform bidding keep running on those numbers anyway.

Our audit is part of our analytics and tracking services, and it covers the whole measurement stack rather than GA4 alone: Google Tag Manager, Google Ads conversions, the Meta pixel and Conversions API, consent settings, and how all of them compare with what your backend recorded. You get a plain-English report ranked by business impact. On the Audit and Fix plans, we then repair what we found within a set number of hours, and confirm the fixes by checking tracked purchases or leads against your real orders.

What Our Google Analytics Audit Service Checks

AreaWhat we checkWhy it matters
GA4 property settingsTime zone, currency, data retention, Google signals, reporting identity and user-provided data settings.Wrong currency or a short retention window quietly limits every report.
Data streamsDuplicate streams, enhanced measurement options, cross-domain settings, unwanted referrals and data redaction.Payment gateways and checkout domains stealing credit is one of the most common faults we find.
Traffic filtersInternal and developer traffic definitions and whether filters are active.Your own team should not show up as customers.
Events and key eventsEvent names, parameters, duplicates, events firing on click instead of success, and which events are marked as key events.Key events drive conversion reporting and, when imported, ad bidding.
Ecommerce trackingThe full ecommerce event set, the items array, transaction IDs, values, tax, shipping and refunds.Revenue reports and product performance depend on it.
Google Tag ManagerContainer structure, unused or paused tags, hard-coded tags duplicating GTM tags, trigger logic and naming.A messy container is where most double-firing comes from.
Google AdsGA4 and Google Ads linking, conversion actions, primary versus secondary goals, enhanced conversions and conversion values.Smart Bidding optimizes toward whatever you count as a conversion.
Meta pixel and Conversions APIEvent setup, deduplication with event_id, event match quality and duplicate pixels.Duplicate or missing events change how Meta delivers your ads.
ConsentCookie banner behavior, Consent Mode v2 signals and whether tags respect the user's choice.Consent Mode v2 has been required for EEA traffic since March 2024, and broken banners can switch off measurement entirely.
Personal dataEmail addresses, phone numbers or names leaking into URLs, page titles or event parameters.Google's policies prohibit sending personal data to Google Analytics.
IntegrationsSearch Console, BigQuery and Merchant Center links.Missing links remove organic query data and raw data exports you may need later.

How Our GA4 and Tracking Audit Works

  1. Access and context (days 1 to 2). You give us view or edit access to GA4, Google Tag Manager, Google Ads and Meta Events Manager. We ask a few questions about your business, recent site changes and which numbers you trust least.
  2. Configuration review (days 2 to 4). We go through every setting in the table above, export the GTM container for review, and list every tag on the site, including hard-coded ones and those added by apps or plugins.
  3. Live testing (days 4 to 6). We complete real journeys on desktop and mobile, with consent accepted and declined, and watch each event in GA4 DebugView, Tag Assistant, the GTM preview mode and Meta's test events tool.
  4. Backend comparison (days 5 to 7). On the Audit and Fix plans, we compare purchases or leads in GA4, Google Ads and Meta with your Shopify, WooCommerce or CRM records for the same period, and explain the gap.
  5. Report and call (week 2). You receive the findings ranked by impact, with the evidence for each, and we walk through them on a call.
  6. Fixes and verification (weeks 2 to 3, Audit and Fix plans). We fix issues in priority order within the included hours, publish GTM changes with version notes, and retest each fix. A short follow-up check confirms data has settled.

Google Analytics Audit Deliverables and What a Clean Setup Looks Like

  • Audit report. Every finding with severity, evidence, business impact and the recommended fix, written for marketers and developers alike.
  • Tag inventory. A list of every tracking tag on the site, where it comes from and whether it should stay.
  • Event map. Current events and key events, with notes on what each one means and which should change.
  • Backend comparison. Tracked versus actual purchases or leads, with the expected gap explained (Audit and Fix plans).
  • Fix log. What we changed, when, and in which GTM version, so changes can be traced or reversed (Audit and Fix plans).

A clean setup does not mean GA4 matches your store exactly. Ad blockers, declined consent and browser privacy features mean some activity is never tracked. What success looks like is a small, stable and explained gap, one count per real purchase or lead, ad platforms receiving the right conversions with the right values, and documentation your next developer can follow.

Google Analytics Audit Service Pricing

Common GA4 Data Problems a Tracking Audit Uncovers

Purchases counted twice

A purchase tag in GTM and another from a Shopify app or a theme snippet, or a confirmation page that fires again when refreshed. Revenue looks healthy and ad platforms over-report. We remove the duplicate source and use transaction IDs so repeats can be spotted.

Leads tracked on click, not on success

A "form submit" event that fires when someone clicks the button, even if validation fails. Lead counts look higher than the CRM shows. We move the trigger to a confirmed success signal.

Payment gateways and booking tools as referrals

PayPal, Stripe or a booking tool showing up as a top referral source with high revenue. The original source of those sales is lost. We add unwanted referral rules and set up cross-domain measurement where needed.

Consent banners that block everything or nothing

Some banners stop all measurement until a user clicks, and some never pass consent signals at all. We check the banner and Consent Mode v2 in every state and fix the setup so tags behave as your legal team intends.

Key events that do not reflect the business

Scroll depth, page views or newsletter signups marked as key events alongside purchases, then imported to Google Ads as primary goals. Bidding starts optimizing for cheap actions. We trim key events to real outcomes and set the rest as secondary.

Ecommerce events with missing items data

Purchase events without product details mean item reports are empty and product-level ROAS is impossible. We correct the data layer with your developer so every ecommerce event carries a full items array.

Google Analytics for SEO: Organic Reporting Checks in Every Audit

Google Analytics and SEO reporting depend on each other, and SEO teams are often the first to notice data problems. Every audit includes checks that matter for organic reporting:

  • Search Console linked to GA4, so query and landing page data can be viewed next to engagement and key events.
  • Organic search channel grouping working correctly for Google, Bing and DuckDuckGo, with referrals from AI assistants such as ChatGPT grouped deliberately instead of lost among other referrals.
  • Site search tracking enabled with the right query parameter, so you can see what visitors look for and fail to find.
  • Landing page reports free of duplicate URLs caused by tracking parameters or uppercase variations.
  • Page titles and URLs free of personal data, which also keeps reports readable.

If you also need a full SEO audit service with Google Analytics data included, our SEO audit covers crawl, indexing and content, and uses the analytics findings from this review.

Website Analytics Health Checks You Can Run Before Calling Us

You can spot many website analytics problems in a few minutes. If any of these look wrong, an audit is likely worth it.

  1. Compare last month's purchases or leads in GA4 with your store or CRM. A large or changing gap means something is broken.
  2. Check your top referral sources. Payment providers, your own domain or checkout tools in the list mean misconfigured referrals.
  3. Look at the share of traffic in "Unassigned" or "(not set)". A growing share usually points to UTM or tagging problems.
  4. Open Google Ads conversions and check which actions are primary. Anything that is not a real business outcome should not be.
  5. Check the data retention setting in GA4 admin. If it is still on the default two months, explorations cannot look further back.
  6. Accept and decline cookies on your own site and use Tag Assistant to see what fires in each case.

Outsource a Google Analytics Audit or Run It In-House?

OptionWorks well whenLimits
In-house analyst or developerYou have someone who knows GA4, GTM and your ad platforms well and has time set aside.People rarely audit their own setup objectively, and ad platform and consent checks often fall between teams.
Ad agency auditYour ad agency checks its own conversions as part of onboarding.Usually limited to the platforms they manage, and they are judging tracking that reports on their own results.
Independent tracking auditYou want the whole stack reviewed against backend numbers by someone with no stake in the results.Needs access to several accounts and a few hours of your team's time for questions.

Many clients outsource a Google Analytics audit service when they change agencies, before scaling ad spend, or after a site rebuild, because those are the moments when an independent check is worth most.

Platform-Specific Checks in a Google Analytics Audit

Each platform breaks tracking in its own way, so the audit adds checks for the system your site runs on.

  • Shopify. Checkout pages run Shopify's sandboxed customer events, so we check whether purchase tracking comes from the Google and YouTube app, a custom pixel, a third-party app or several of them at once, which is a common cause of double counting.
  • WooCommerce and WordPress. Tracking plugins, theme snippets and GTM often all add tags. We check which one owns each event and whether caching or page builders strip the data layer.
  • Headless and custom builds. Single-page apps need virtual page views and events pushed on route changes. We check that GA4 sees each screen once and that purchases fire on confirmed orders, not on button clicks.
  • Lead platforms. Form tools, booking widgets and call tracking numbers each need their own success signal and source capture.

When a Tracking Audit Is Worth Booking

  • After a site migration, redesign, new theme or new checkout.
  • When GA4, Google Ads, Meta and your store or CRM report noticeably different numbers.
  • Before increasing ad budgets, so bidding learns from correct conversions.
  • After changing your cookie banner or consent platform.
  • When a new agency or marketing hire takes over and needs a trusted baseline.
  • When a Google Analytics dashboard shows sudden jumps or drops nobody can explain.

Who This Google Analytics Audit Is For

A good fit

  • Ecommerce stores and lead generation businesses spending on Google Ads or Meta whose reports no longer match reality.
  • Teams that inherited a GA4 property and GTM container from a previous agency or developer.
  • Businesses about to scale ad spend, change agencies or launch a new site.
  • Marketing managers who need confidence in their numbers before reporting to leadership.

Probably not a fit

  • Sites with no GA4 property at all. You need a build, not an audit, through our GA4 setup service.
  • Teams who want a full rebuild of their tracking. If the audit shows that is needed, we will say so and scope it separately.
  • Anyone looking for help using GA4 reports day to day without any tracking concerns. A short training session suits that better.

Next Steps After Your Tracking Audit

Most audits lead naturally into one of a few next steps. Our Google Tag Manager setup service rebuilds containers that are beyond repair, our conversion tracking team maps ad platform conversions to real outcomes, and our server-side tracking service improves data quality where browsers block tags. Tracking Audit and Fixes questions

Is Google Analytics discontinued?
No. Universal Analytics, the older version, stopped processing data in July 2023 (July 2024 for paid 360 properties) and is no longer accessible. Google Analytics 4 replaced it and is the current product. If your site still has an old UA tag, it does nothing, and an audit will flag it for removal. Historical UA data could not be moved into GA4, so GA4 history starts when your property was created.
Does Google audit my Google Analytics setup for me?
Not in the sense of a full review. GA4 shows some diagnostics in its admin and home screens, and Tag Assistant helps you check tags, but Google does not review whether your events, key events, consent setup and ad conversions reflect your business. Google Ads representatives sometimes suggest changes, mostly about conversion settings in their own platform. An independent audit checks the whole stack against your real orders or leads.
Is Google Analytics free, or will we need GA4 360?
Standard GA4 is free and is enough for most small and mid-sized businesses. Google Analytics 360 is a paid version for large organizations that need higher limits, longer data retention, service agreements and more advanced integrations. Our audit works with either, and if you are near the limits of the free version, we will tell you which ones matter and whether BigQuery export solves the problem first.
What can be tracked with Google Analytics?
GA4 can track page views, scrolls, outbound clicks, site searches, video engagement, file downloads and form interactions automatically through enhanced measurement. With Google Tag Manager or code, it can track almost any interaction you define: add to cart, checkout steps, purchases with product details, lead forms, calls, bookings and logins. It cannot legally collect personal data such as email addresses, and it misses visitors who block tags or decline consent.
Will fixing GA4 correct our historical data?
Mostly no. GA4 does not reprocess past data when you fix a tag, so duplicate purchases or missing events from before the fix stay in old reports. Some changes, such as custom channel groups, do apply to historical data. We annotate the fix date in reports and dashboards so before and after periods are compared fairly, and where you have a BigQuery export, corrected views of past data can sometimes be rebuilt.
How is this paid audit different from your free tracking audit?
The free audit is a short first look at one area, enough to tell you whether something is clearly wrong and what to check next. The paid Google Analytics audit service covers every setting, tag and platform in the stack, tests journeys with consent accepted and declined, compares tracked numbers with your backend, and on the Audit and Fix plans includes hands-on fixes and verification.
