Learning how to rank in ChatGPT starts with understanding that there is no ranking in the traditional sense. ChatGPT does not show ten blue links in a fixed order. It writes an answer and, when it searches the web, cites a handful of sources it used. "Ranking" means being one of those cited sources, or being the brand it names when someone asks for a recommendation.
The good news is that most of what earns citations is solid SEO and clear writing. The difference is in a few technical details that many sites get wrong without knowing it, and in how much weight brand mentions on other sites carry.
How ChatGPT decides what to show
ChatGPT answers from two places. The first is what the model learned during training, a snapshot of text up to its training cutoff. If your brand was widely and consistently described online before that point, the model may mention you without searching at all. You cannot update that snapshot directly; it changes only when new models are trained.
The second is live search. When a question needs current information, or when the user turns search on, ChatGPT runs web searches, reads the pages it finds and cites them. OpenAI says ChatGPT search uses its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot, together with third-party search providers. It also tends to turn one prompt into several narrower searches, so a question like "best project management tool for a small agency" may trigger searches for comparisons, pricing and reviews. Your content can be pulled in through any of those.
Live search is where you can make progress quickly, so most of the steps below focus on it.
How do you rank in ChatGPT search?
You rank in ChatGPT search by making sure its crawlers and search partners can reach your pages, then publishing answer-first content that is more specific than the alternatives and backing it with consistent brand information across the web. These seven steps cover it:
- Let OpenAI's crawlers in. OpenAI documents separate user agents: OAI-SearchBot for search, GPTBot for model training and ChatGPT-User for pages fetched during a conversation. You can block GPTBot if you do not want your content used for training and still allow OAI-SearchBot, but blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps you out of search answers. Check robots.txt, and check firewall and CDN bot settings too, because bot protection can block these crawlers without anyone on your team noticing.
- Make sure Bing can index you. Set up Bing Webmaster Tools, submit your XML sitemap and check for crawl errors. Supporting IndexNow means Bing hears about new and updated URLs right away. Plenty of sites that rank well on Google have never looked at their Bing coverage.
- Write answer-first pages. Put a direct answer to the page's main question in the first two sentences, then support it. Use descriptive headings phrased the way people ask, and short paragraphs that make sense on their own, because AI systems often lift a single passage rather than a whole page.
- Be specific. Vague pages lose to specific ones. Include the facts a model can quote: dimensions, compatibility, steps, timelines, who it is for, who it is not for, and how it compares with alternatives. Comparison tables are especially easy to extract.
- Keep your brand story consistent everywhere. Use the same company name, description, founder, service list and location on your site, LinkedIn, business directories and review platforms. Add Organization schema with sameAs links to your official profiles. Inconsistent descriptions make it harder for any system to be confident about what you do.
- Earn mentions on the sites ChatGPT already cites. Run the prompts your buyers would use and note which domains appear as sources. Being included, accurately, on those pages is frequently worth more than another article on your own blog.
- Keep content current and parseable. Show a visible last-updated date and refresh facts that change. Serve important content in the HTML rather than relying on JavaScript to render it, since not all AI crawlers render scripts reliably, and avoid hiding key answers inside tabs or accordions that only load on click.
If you want these checks run across your whole site, our AI search optimization service covers crawler access, content structure, schema and off-site mentions as one program. The answer engine optimization guide covers the same thinking for Google AI Overviews and other assistants.
How do you get mentioned in ChatGPT?
You get mentioned in ChatGPT by being named, accurately and often, on the pages it reads when people ask for recommendations in your category. A citation links to your page; a mention is ChatGPT naming your brand in the answer itself, and for "best X for Y" prompts the mention is what drives buyers. Mentions usually come from third-party sources: comparison articles, review platforms, industry directories, community threads and news coverage. Make sure those pages describe you with the same category words buyers use in prompts. If you sell "inventory software for small breweries", that exact phrase should appear on your site and on the profiles and lists that cover you, so the connection between your brand and the need is easy to make.
How do you rank higher in ChatGPT?
You rank higher in ChatGPT, meaning cited more often and named earlier in answers, by closing the gaps between your pages and the sources it currently prefers. Run your prompt panel, open each cited competitor page and compare: do they answer the question in the first paragraph, include a comparison table, show pricing models or list specifications you leave out? Then cover the sub-questions ChatGPT searches for when it breaks a prompt down, ideally as a cluster of linked pages around one topic rather than a single long page. Refresh those pages when facts change, and keep improving the pages that are sometimes cited before creating new ones.
What about llms.txt?
llms.txt is a proposed plain-text file that gives AI tools a curated map of your most useful pages. We publish one on the sites we run, including this one and Boiler Decoder, because it is quick to maintain. Be realistic about it, though: no major AI provider has confirmed that llms.txt affects which sources get cited. Treat it as low-cost housekeeping, not a ranking tactic.
How to measure ChatGPT visibility
- Referral traffic in GA4. Visits from ChatGPT usually appear with chatgpt.com as the source, and links in ChatGPT search results often carry utm_source=chatgpt.com. Build a GA4 exploration or channel group for AI assistants so the numbers are not lost in general referral traffic.
- A fixed prompt panel. Write 20 to 40 prompts your buyers would realistically use and run them monthly, recording whether you are mentioned, cited or absent, and which competitors appear. Answers vary between runs, so look at trends across the panel rather than one result.
- Server logs. Count requests from OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User. If they never appear, you have an access problem to fix before anything else.
- Conversions, not just visits. AI referrals are often small in volume but high in intent. Track them through to leads or orders.
Using ChatGPT for SEO work
The other side of the topic is using ChatGPT for SEO tasks. It is genuinely useful for grouping large keyword lists into topics, drafting JSON-LD schema for a developer to check, writing regular expressions for Search Console filters, suggesting title variations to test and turning messy notes into a first outline.
It is poor at anything that needs live data. It cannot tell you real search volumes or current rankings, and it will state outdated or invented facts with confidence. Publishing unedited AI drafts at scale produces the thin, repetitive pages that search engines and AI assistants both skip over. Our own tool, AM Jarvis, runs on the user's own AI API keys and puts generated pages through a uniqueness check before publishing, for exactly that reason.
Using ChatGPT to write product descriptions
ChatGPT can draft product descriptions quickly if you give it the real facts: materials, dimensions, compatibility, care instructions and who the product is for. Ask for a specific structure, such as a two-sentence summary followed by bullet points, and give it your brand voice rules. Then edit every draft by hand, check each claim against the product, and remove the generic phrases it tends to repeat across products. Our guide to product description SEO covers what a finished description should contain.
Mistakes that keep brands out of ChatGPT answers
- Blocking every AI crawler in robots.txt or at the CDN, then wondering why the brand never appears.
- Only describing your offer in marketing language ("innovative", "leading") with no concrete facts to quote.
- Letting old, inaccurate descriptions of the business sit on directories and profiles.
- Ignoring technical SEO. If search engines struggle to crawl and index your pages, AI search built on top of them will too. An SEO audit checklist catches most of these problems.
- Expecting instant results. Crawling, indexing and third-party mentions all take time to accumulate.
