Squarespace SEO services are the work of making a Squarespace website rank for the searches your customers actually type, then turning that traffic into enquiries. Squarespace gives you a solid starting point: clean code, automatic sitemaps, SSL and SEO fields on every page. What it does not give you is a keyword plan, page titles written to win clicks, a site structure that matches how people search, or content that answers their questions. That is what we add, working inside your existing site as part of our Squarespace development services.
You get a written keyword map, every important page rewritten or adjusted for its target search, the technical settings that Squarespace exposes configured correctly, and a reporting setup in Google Search Console so you can see impressions and clicks grow. If you choose a monthly plan, we keep adding and improving pages each month instead of doing a one-off pass and leaving.
What Our Squarespace SEO Services Include
| Area | What we do | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Keyword research and mapping | Find the searches your buyers use, group them by intent and assign one main topic per page | Each page has a clear job, and your own pages stop competing with each other |
| SEO titles and descriptions | Write the SEO title and description for every page, blog post and product, and set site-wide title formats | Better click-through from search results, not just rankings |
| URL slugs and redirects | Clean up slugs such as "new-page-1" and add URL mappings for every change | Readable URLs without losing the history of old ones |
| Headings and page structure | One Heading 1 per page, logical Heading 2 and 3 sections, and text that answers the query early | Search engines and visitors understand the page quickly |
| Images | Alt text, sensible file names and lighter images on slow pages | Accessibility, image search visibility and faster loading |
| Local SEO | Business Information panel, location page, Google Business Profile alignment and consistent name, address and phone | Better chances in map results and "near me" searches |
| Structured data | Check what Squarespace adds automatically and add JSON-LD for FAQs, services or local business details where the plan allows code injection | Eligibility for richer search results and clearer signals to AI search tools |
| Internal linking | Link service pages, blog posts and the home page in a structure that follows the keyword map | Authority flows to the pages that bring in enquiries |
| Content | SEO blog posts and new service or location pages (monthly plans) | More pages that can rank for more searches |
| Search Console and reporting | Connect Google Search Console, submit the sitemap and set up a simple monthly report | You can see which searches find you and which pages improve |
How Our Squarespace SEO Expert Process Works
- Audit (week 1). We crawl the site with Screaming Frog, review Search Console data if it is connected, check indexing, titles, headings, slugs, images and page speed, and look at the sites that rank above you. You get a list of issues ranked by impact.
- Keyword map (week 1 to 2). We research keywords with Ahrefs and Search Console data, then map one primary topic and a few supporting phrases to each page. Gaps become a list of pages worth creating.
- On-page implementation (weeks 2 to 4). We work through the site as a contributor: SEO titles and descriptions, headings, copy edits, slugs with URL mappings, alt text and internal links. Every change is logged.
- Technical clean-up (in parallel). Hide thin or duplicate pages from search, remove leftover template demo pages, fix broken links, trim heavy media, and add structured data where it helps.
- Content and ongoing work (monthly plans). Each month we work on a set number of pages and publish SEO blog posts that target the keyword map, then review Search Console to decide what to do next.
- Reporting (monthly). A short report on impressions, clicks, average position for your target keywords, pages worked on and next month's plan.
Is Squarespace Good for SEO? Strengths and Limits
Yes, Squarespace is good enough for SEO for most small businesses: it produces clean, mobile-friendly pages and handles the basics automatically. Its limits show up on larger sites and in technical details, where you get fewer controls than WordPress or Wix. Here is an honest view.
| What Squarespace does well | Where Squarespace limits you |
|---|---|
| Automatic sitemap.xml that updates as you publish | You cannot edit robots.txt directly |
| SSL on connected domains and mobile-responsive templates | Some URL patterns are fixed, such as the /p/ segment in 7.1 product URLs |
| SEO title, description and slug fields on pages, posts and products | Blog category and tag views use query-string URLs with little control over their content |
| Canonical tags added automatically | Custom structured data needs code injection, which not every plan includes |
| Option to hide individual pages from search results | No built-in multilingual system; Squarespace points users to Weglot for translation |
| Built-in URL mappings for 301 redirects | Heavy design choices (video backgrounds, large galleries) can slow pages, and you cannot change how assets are served |
For a local service business or a brand site with a few dozen pages, these limits rarely hold rankings back. Content quality, page focus and links matter much more. For a site that needs hundreds of programmatic pages, complex filters or detailed technical control, another platform may suit you better, and we will say so.
Squarespace SEO Checklist for New Websites
Use this as a website SEO checklist before and after launch. It is the same list we work through on a setup project.
Before publishing
- Set the site title, SEO site description and title formats so page titles do not all repeat the site name first.
- Write a unique SEO title and description for every page you plan to publish.
- Rename default slugs so each URL describes the page.
- Delete or disable the template's demo pages, posts and products so they are never indexed.
- Give each page one Heading 1 and use headings for structure, not styling.
- Add alt text to every meaningful image.
- Fill in the Business Information panel with your real name, address and contact details.
- Decide on page-level settings: hide thank-you pages and duplicate pages from search results.
After publishing
- Connect your domain and choose one primary version so the site resolves to a single address.
- Verify the site in Google Search Console and submit /sitemap.xml.
- Connect Bing Webmaster Tools, which can import your Search Console setup.
- Set up or claim your Google Business Profile and link it to the site.
- Check the Crawlers settings, including whether known AI crawlers are blocked, and decide what you want.
As the site grows
- Add a URL mapping every time you change a slug or delete a page that had traffic.
- Publish new pages from your keyword map rather than at random.
- Review Search Console every month for pages with impressions but few clicks, and rewrite their titles.
Treat this as an SEO plan checklist rather than a one-time task. A new site that follows it gets a clean start; the rankings then come from the content and links you add over time.
Squarespace SEO Deliverables and How Progress Is Measured
- A keyword map assigning a primary search to each page, plus a list of pages to create.
- A change log of every title, description, slug, heading and redirect we changed.
- Search Console verified, sitemap submitted and a monthly report template in place.
- On monthly plans: the agreed number of pages improved and posts published each month.
- Progress tracked through impressions, clicks, click-through rate and positions for the target keywords in Search Console, plus enquiries from organic visits where your form tracking allows.
We do not promise rankings or page one. We promise the work, a clear record of it and honest reporting on what it changes.

Squarespace vs Wix for SEO: Which Platform Ranks Better?
Neither platform ranks better on its own: both can rank well, and the deciding factors are content, page focus and links rather than the builder. The differences are in control. Wix exposes more technical settings, including an editable robots.txt, custom structured data per page and customizable URL prefixes for some page types. Squarespace offers fewer switches but produces tidy pages with sensible defaults and less to configure. If your SEO plan depends on fine technical control, Wix or WordPress gives you more room; if it depends on a handful of strong service pages and regular posts, Squarespace is perfectly capable. If you are on Wix, see our Wix SEO services.
Local SEO on Squarespace for Service Businesses
Most Squarespace sites we see belong to local businesses: studios, clinics, contractors, restaurants and professional services. For them, local SEO usually brings the fastest enquiries.
- One page per core service. A single "Services" page rarely ranks for each service. Separate pages with their own titles and copy give each service a chance.
- Location pages only where you really serve. A page per area works when it has specific content: directions, local projects, area details. Copies with the town name swapped add little.
- Consistent business details. Your name, address and phone should match across the site, the Business Information panel, Google Business Profile and directories.
- LocalBusiness schema. Where code injection is available, we add structured data with your opening hours, service area and contact details.
- Reviews. We help you set up a simple routine for asking customers for Google reviews; we never write or buy them.
For multi-location businesses or competitive local markets, our local SEO services go further with citations and Google Business Profile management.
Squarespace SEO Mistakes We Fix Most Often
- Template demo pages and sample blog posts still live and indexed months after launch.
- Every page using the same SEO title, or titles that start with the business name instead of the topic.
- No Heading 1 on the page, or several, because headings were chosen for size rather than structure.
- Slugs changed during a redesign without URL mappings, so old links and rankings were lost.
- All services on one page, so none of them ranks for its own search.
- Blog posts with no excerpt, generic titles and no links to the service pages they support.
- Full-width video headers and uncompressed photos making mobile pages slow.
- The site left password protected after launch, or important pages hidden from search by mistake.
Squarespace SEO and AI Search
AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews pull from pages that answer questions clearly and are easy to crawl. The same basics help here: direct answers near the top of the page, clear headings, FAQ sections with real questions, accurate business details and structured data. Squarespace also has a setting that blocks known AI crawlers. Whether you leave it on is a business decision: blocking them keeps your content out of some AI tools, but also makes it less likely you are cited in their answers. We explain the trade-off and set it the way you choose. Our AI search optimization service covers this in more depth.
Who Our Squarespace SEO Services Suit, and When to Hold Off
A good fit if you:
- Run a service business, practice or small shop on Squarespace and want more enquiries from search.
- Have a site that looks good but gets little traffic from Google.
- Want to stay on Squarespace rather than rebuild on another platform.
- Can commit to several months of steady work, because SEO compounds over time.
Probably not a fit if you:
- Need leads this week. Paid search is the faster channel, and SEO can follow.
- Plan to redesign or move platforms in the next few months. Do the SEO alongside the rebuild instead.
- Want guaranteed rankings. No honest provider can promise them.
